Barcelona suffered a painful humiliation at Camp Nou against Atlético Madrid. If this loss had happened at the Metropolitano, fans could have expected a strong comeback at home. However, this time Hansi Flick and his team were defeated at Camp Nou itself. This is deeply concerning for Barcelona, especially as they are aiming to win their first UEFA Champions League title in the last 11 years.

Barcelona also have a poor record in the Champions League against Spanish teams, with a win percentage below 50%. As the second leg moves to the Metropolitano, Atlético Madrid hold an advantage. In the first leg, Barcelona lost their key center-back Pau Cubarsí due to a red card shown to Giuliano Simeone. While the decision was controversial, such moments are part of modern football, especially in the VAR era. Instead of using it as an excuse, it is more realistic to analyze what might happen in the second leg with this squad.

In the next match, Barcelona will most likely start with Gerard Martín and Araújo in defense. We already saw how vulnerable Gerard Martín looked in transitional defending during the first half. He struggled to match Atlético’s pace, which creates a serious gap on the left side, especially because João Cancelo is highly offensive. On the right side, Araújo is expected to give his best, but Koundé’s recent form remains unconvincing. This gives Atlético a clear attacking edge unless Joan García delivers an extraordinary performance in goal.

In midfield, Frenkie de Jong and Bernal are expected to return, with Frenkie likely to start. This will strengthen Barcelona’s control in the middle of the pitch. However, against a team like Atlético, who are comfortable in defending for 90 minutes, possession alone may not be enough. With a two-goal lead, Atlético will happily allow Barcelona to control the ball. In such a do-or-die match, a player like Bernal, who can pass, shoot, and contribute during set pieces, could trouble the defense led by Hancko and Le Normand. The introduction of Fermín in the second half could also be crucial due to his energy and attacking intent against Los Rojiblancos.

At Camp Nou, Barcelona managed over 20 shots against Simeone’s defensive setup but failed to score even once past Musso. This once again raises serious questions about Barcelona’s finishing quality. The team clearly misses Raphinha, who has consistently stepped up in big matches when other attackers failed. How Flick addresses the finishing issue in the second leg remains a major issue. Atlético already executed a clear defensive plan in the first leg and in previous matches on how to stop Barcelona, making it even harder for Barcelona’s attackers to break through.

Pedri, Cancelo, and Yamal can create chances, but Lewandowski, Ferran, and Rashford must convert them. If Barcelona can finally finish their chances, they still have a real opportunity for a comeback at the Metropolitano. However, Atlético Madrid have a clear advantage in the second leg as it is their home match. They are defensively solid, while Barcelona’s defense has shown signs of vulnerability.
