According to Fernando Polo, Barcelona could line up with Frenkie de Jong next to Pedri in the decisive Champions League second leg against Atlético Madrid, a decision viewed as crucial for gaining control in midfield.

Frenkie has been out since late February because of a hamstring problem, but he has now returned to full team training after the loss at Camp Nou. Following that defeat to Diego Simeone’s side, the team is eager to bounce back strongly in the return match at the Metropolitano Stadium next week.

Pedri, on the other hand, featured for just 47 minutes in the first leg before being taken off as a precaution. The coaching staff wanted to protect him from injury and make sure he would be available for the all important clash in Madrid. There is also a chance he could be rested in the upcoming league game to ensure he is completely fit for the European fixture.

For Barcelona supporters, the sight of Pedri and Frenkie together again in such a high pressure game brings real optimism. This pairing is widely considered one of the most technically skilled midfield duos in world football. Both players are excellent under pressure, capable of controlling the rhythm of the game, and known for delivering passes that break defensive lines and shift momentum.

Over this season and the previous one, the Pedri and Frenkie partnership has proven itself in major matches, often overcoming physically stronger midfields through smart positioning, composure, and intelligent control rather than relying on speed or strength.

With several important players unavailable for the second leg, the impact of this midfield pairing could be decisive. If both are fully fit and perform at their best, Barcelona will at least have the tools to compete strongly in Madrid.
