Former Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman shared his thoughts on Alessandro Bastoni possibly joining FC Barcelona. He made it clear that he does not think the defender is a signing.
Koeman talked about the discussion around Bastonis profile and if he is suitable for Barcelona. He warned that people might think Bastoni is perfect. He may not be what Barcelona needs in defence.
Bastoni profile praised but questions remain
Bastoni is known as one of Europes best defenders who can play the ball out from the back with his left foot. His performances for Inter Milan have made him a recognized modern centre back for teams that focus on possession.
However Koeman thinks that just looking at Bastonis skills can be misleading when evaluating him for Barcelonas system.
Inters system helps Bastoni
Koeman said that Bastoni benefits a lot from Inters setup. Playing in a three gives him support and protection allowing him to play more safely.
At Barcelona defence is very different. Defenders are often left alone in spaces and have to handle one-on-one situations without help.
Concerns over defensive reliability
Koeman has concerns about Bastonis ability to handle pressure in situations. He pointed out that against attackers and in open transitions Bastoni may struggle because he is not fast enough and sometimes hesitates.
These things could be a problem in La Liga, where teams often quickly exploit weaknesses.
Risk taking in buildup raises doubts
While Bastonis composure on the ball is a strength Koeman said it can also be a weakness. Taking risks during buildup might work in controlled systems. At Barcelona mistakes can directly lead to goals.
He emphasized that defenders at Barcelona must balance ability with defensive discipline.
Physical presence and leadership questioned
Koeman also raised concerns about Bastonis dominance and leadership qualities. For a player of his size he expects aggression in duels and stronger aerial presence.
He added that Barcelona centre backs must lead the line organize the team and take responsibility during tough moments something he does not consistently see in Bastoni.
Not the right priority for Barcelona
Koeman thinks Bastoni is a player who does well in systems but may struggle in chaotic defensive situations, like those often faced by Barcelona.
For him Barcelona should focus on defenders who're more dominant, aggressive and capable of handling high-pressure scenarios rather than prioritizing stylistic qualities.
