Another last man foul, another red card and another UCL elimination for Barcelona; the wait for a European title now exceeds 11 years for the Catalan outfits.
Surprise Selections That Energised the First Half
Barcelona came up with surprise inclusions in the starting 11, including Gavi, Eric, Ferran and Fermin. All these changes brought a positive impact from the first minute. Barca were able to overload and pressurise central areas and, as a result, score 2 goals in the first half itself, but again, Atletico were able to expose the Catalan defence with Griezmann's pass and Lookman's finish, although Barca played the first half really well but missed crucial chances which could have changed the game to the Catalan side.
Momentum Shift After the Break
But the script got flipped in the second half. Athletico were able to hold the grip of the game with Griezmann and Llorente; Alvarez and Lookman were able to give a heavy attacking threat; Koke was comfortable in the midfield, and their defenders sat compact on a low block. Barca could have replaced Gavi for Frenkie in the earlier first half, but that decision took place only in the 81st minute.
Eric got a direct red card for a foul on Sorloth which completely took the game away from the visitors.
Flick’s Substitutions Fail to Change the Script
Substitutions of Hansi Flick didn’t serve any purpose except Rooney; he came and gave his best in the last minutes. Lamine Yamal gave his all for the game with 1 goal, 1 assist and countless efforts, but still, Barça were not able to defeat the 2-goal deficit that they got from the first leg.
