Barcelona nearing Antony Gordon agreement
Barcelona are on the verge of completing a deal for English attacker Antony Gordon from Newcastle United in a transfer worth €70 million plus an additional €10 million in performance-based add-ons. The winger is expected to arrive in Barcelona later this week to undergo medical examinations and officially finalise his contract, reports Fabrizio Romano.
Interestingly, Barcelona had not been actively working on the transfer until Deco intensified efforts after his recent visit to London.
Deco overturns Bayern’s advantage
Before Barcelona entered the race seriously, Antony Gordon had already reached an agreement on personal terms with Bayern Munich, while negotiations between Newcastle United and the German club were progressing. However, Barcelona’s sporting vision ultimately convinced the player to prioritise a move to Camp Nou instead.
Barcelona moved aggressively for Gordon after facing major complications in their pursuits of Julián Álvarez and João Pedro due to high valuations and the unwillingness of clubs to negotiate. As a result, the Catalans quickly shifted towards Gordon as an alternative attacking solution because of his positional flexibility and suitability for Flick’s system.
All details regarding the long-term agreement between Barcelona, Newcastle United, and the player have reportedly already been settled, with only medical tests and the official signing remaining before the World Cup.
Gordon considered perfect fit for Flick
Barcelona believe Gordon’s physical profile and playing style could fit perfectly under Hansi Flick. Standing at 1.83 metres, the English forward combines pace, dribbling quality, and strong physicality in attacking duels while also showing impressive composure and decision-making in the final third.
Gordon already caused problems for Barcelona earlier in the season after scoring Newcastle United’s opening goal against the Catalan side during a Champions League group-stage clash.
The arrival of Gordon could also influence Barcelona’s thinking regarding Marcus Rashford’s potential permanent move, as both players primarily prefer operating from the left wing.
Jose Lavrez reported that Hansi Flick personally requested the signing of Antony Gordon to strengthen the attacking department, while Barcelona are still expected to continue their plans to bring in another striker during the summer window.
